The Chinese Zodiac is a classification based on the lunar calendar that assigns an animal to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. The Chinese Zodiac is different yet shares some similarities with the traditional Western or American Zodiac. For instance, some differences are that the animals of the Chinese Zodiac are not associated to constellations found in the sky. The 12 part cycle corresponds to years rather than months and although there are some animals in the Western Zodiac, the other signs are not. Some similar traits between the two zodiacs are that both have time cycles divided into 12 parts. Each part is believed to represent a person's personality or events in their life that may have been influenced by the person's particular relationship to the cycle.
Originating in China, the Chinese Zodiac remains popular in many countries besides the United States; East Asian and Southeast Asian countries, Japan, Cambodia, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam are the countries believed to use the Chinese Zodiac most often.

The zodiac traditionally begins with the sign of the Rat. All the signs, in order are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
One common misconception is that the animals assigned by year are the only signs with Western descriptions leaving out the fact that there are also animal signs that are assigned by the month-called “inner animals”, by the day called “true animals” and even the hour called “secret animals”. It is also believed that the Earth represents all 12 signs and 5 seasons.
